In this episode, Dr. Matt Motil explains how the metaphor “life is like a pot of crabs” applies to your life!
This whole episode is based off of an article I wrote for the Good Men Project, which you can find here
Let’s get started…
Life Is Like A Pot of Crabs
So I will give you the background behind a great metaphor in life!
If you bring a pot to boil, and take a live crab and throw the crab into the pot of water, it will jump out.
To cook a crab, you must cook at least 2 at a time and cook them at room temperature water.
Once you put the 2 crabs into the room temperature water, the 1st crab will try to escape and the 2nd crab will pull it back into the water. Once the 1st crab falls back into the water, the 2nd crab will try to escape and the 1st crab will bring it down. It becomes a never ending cycle.
While the crabs are in this pot, you can start to boil the water and while this never ending cycle continues, eventually the crabs will boil themselves to death.
This happens because the crabs do not allow each other to achieve something they want to do.
2. Toxic vs Momentum Relationships
In life we metaphorically have crabs close to us.
Especially for entrepreneurs, you deal with people close to you that will say you can’t do this, it will never work out, etc. During the time in your life when you are trying to break away from your 9-5 day job, these people will become clear.
There is no way to achieve greatness with these type of toxic relationships.
It ultimately comes down to how badly do you want to level up?
You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. There are people that either pull you forward or backwards.
Your network = your net worth.
You need to think who am I spending my time with?
People that are team toxic are reflecting their insecurities on you and don’t want you to become a better version of yourself. These are people you don’t want to associate with. They are the crabs!
Stay away from the crabs!
